Sinterklaas is Rhinebeck’s annual holiday celebration that takes over the city with artists, music and holiday decorations. Based on Dutch traditions, Sinterklaas is a unique Christmas experience that is primarily aimed at children.

The entire event, including all activities, is completely free. Donations fund 100% of the entertainment and families everywhere are invited to participate. The day is mainly focused on children who are invited to decorate their own tree branches and become a “king or queen” for the day.

The majority of Sinterklaas activities take place outdoors, however, there are many indoor attractions that are usually crowded with people. In the past, the craft area where kids can make their own branches and wreaths for the parade was neck and neck with families. Other events, like the storytelling in the Beekman arms, have also been incredibly crowded with children crammed together on the floor watching performers while the adults are in a standing-only situation.

It’s unclear if any changes to these events will be announced, but Sinterklaas encourages those interested to attend this year’s visit their website for updates and more information. We found no mention of the health and safety measures taken.
