Aptly named “Boldwater”, this prominent Colonial in 103 Dodges Wharf Road in Brooklin, Maine sits on a sprawling 38-acre estate with a private beach along Blue Hill Bay.
The house is owned by Tahitian actress Louise Tefaafana Murfey, who played a Tahitian in the 1962 film “Mutiny on the Bounty.” Murfey moved to the United States and met and married her late husband, Spencer Latham Murfey Jr., a multi-millionaire and ocean racing enthusiast, listing agent. Souzan Davood of Coldwell Banker Realtynoted.
It was Spencer Murfey’s nautical hobby that brought the couple to Brooklyn, where they erected the sprawling home in 1980. The home remains an ideal location for boating: it features 1,400 feet of shoreline and two moorings in deep water allowed, where the Murfeys would moor their yacht, Davood said.
The estate itself, listed at $9,000,000, comprises three buildings: the main house, a gatehouse and a guest house.
The gatehouse and guesthouse both have four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room, Davood said, although the gatehouse rooms are slightly smaller.
The 14,375 square foot main house features six bedrooms, five full bathrooms, three half bathrooms, and nine wood-burning fireplaces. The first floor houses formal living and dining areas, a spacious family room with multiple sitting areas and a wet bar, and a kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. There are wooden and tiled floors throughout and hand painted murals.
Although the house offers ocean views from almost every room, the family room eclipses the rest, with floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors that look out to the water and distant mountains.
Three of the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and the one on the first floor offers a separate entrance that leads to the private beach. The generously appointed master suite has its own fireplace, a spacious sitting area with rows of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water, and an elegant en-suite bathroom with wooden floors, a stone tub, and a swan-shaped faucet.
There’s room to work and play, with a wood-panelled library on the second floor and a heated swimming pool and pool house with a bathroom on the grounds. There is also space to relax thanks to the sauna, hot tub and wine cellar in the basement. The three floors of the house are accessible by elevator.
The house offers options for veterans or aspiring horticulturists, with an apple orchard on the grounds and two greenhouses, one of which is attached to the main house.
For those looking for even more outdoor space, there is an additional 17 acres of land (currently the site of a farmhouse to be rehabilitated) that may be part of the sale, Davood said. Potential buyers can also easily add more interior space, as permits have already been pulled for two additional homes on the existing 38 acres, Davood said.
