KOTA KINABALU: A mall in Sandakan is not collapsing as claimed on social media, and the loud noises heard were just tiles cracking, its management says.

Harbor Mall Sandakan management has denied claims the building was unsafe after viral videos on social media showed people rushing out of the mall, allegedly because an earthquake hit the building.

One video shows mall visitors rushing up the escalators while another shows crowds standing outside the mall as people empty the building.

“We want to respond to the fake news released today showing shoppers rushing out of our mall.

“Yes indeed there was loud noise on level 4. This was caused by a small section of floor tiles that popped off this morning.

“Rest assured that our mall building is in absolute tenable condition and there are no structural issues as claimed by some irresponsible parties,” mall management said in a statement Sunday, June 12.
