MASON CITY, Iowa – MASON CITY AIRPORT TERMINAL UPGRADE PLANS CONTINUE.

MASON CITY AIRPORT’S PLANS FOR A NEW TERMINAL TAKE A BIG STEP FORWARD.

THE AIRPORT COMMISSION HAS DISCUSSED TWO FLOOR PLANS FOR A NEW TERMINAL TO BE BUILT JUST WEST OF THE CURRENT SITE.

ALL HAVE SINGLE LEVEL OPERATIONS.

DUE TO COST WITH AN ALTERNATE PLAN – MEMBERS VOTED TO APPROVE THE ORIGINAL FLOOR PLAN.

AIRPORT DIRECTOR DAVID SIMS HEARED FROM MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY ON THE NEED TO UPGRADE THE OLD TERMINAL OVER 6 DECADES OLD.

“A lot of people see the need, they’ve tried to leave here on flights that are almost full and are crammed into our security checkpoint. I think the majority of the community sees the need and sees the opportunity we have for this project.”

SIMS HOPE TO HAVE PILES IN THE GROUND BY THIS WINTER – CONSTRUCTION TO START NEXT SPRING.

THE TERMINAL YOU SEE BEHIND ME WILL BE MUCH DIFFERENT IN A FEW YEARS.

TODAY – THE AIRPORT COMMISSION DISCUSSED TWO FLOOR PLANS FOR THE NEW TERMINAL – BOTH HAVING THE TERMINAL ON ONE LEVEL.

ALTERNATIVE PLAN 1 WILL INCLUDE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES AND A CONFERENCE ROOM FACING THE TRACK.

INSTEAD – COMMISSION APPROVED ORIGINAL FLOOR PLAN.

AIRPORT MANAGER DAVID SIMS SAYS IT COMES AT AN EXTRA COST.

SIMS SAYS THE AIRPORT HAS BUDGED 7 AND A HALF MILLION DOLLARS ONLY FOR THE TERMINAL.

COMBINED WITH CONSTRUCTION WORK ON THE GROUND AND PARKING – THE OVERALL COST WOULD BE CLOSER TO 12-14 MILLION.

THE COST IS COVERED BY CARE ACT FUNDING.
