Loulou Group from Paris heads to London with gourmet restaurant in Mayfair | Latest news

0

In Paris and St Tropez, they are responsible for a list of hotter than hot restaurants like Loulou and Girafe – now the Loulou Group is heading to London for its first UK opening.

The team has taken over a Grade II listed building in the heart of Mayfair with plans for a gourmet restaurant. 16 Charles Street has quite a history as a place to party. In the 1920s, it belonged to Dame Margaret Greville who threw a ball at it as part of her role as matchmaker for the Queen Mother and then Prince Albert.

Having seen plans for a casino to take over the Mayfair mansion a few years ago, local residents should be much happier that Parisian restaurateurs are in charge. They plan to “restore 16 Charles Street to its former glory and make it accessible to the public for everyone to enjoy.”

To this end, they will open a restaurant on the ground floor and on the first floor. The second floor will be a “living room and dining room”. The third will include a chef’s table and a private dining area, with more private dining areas on the top floor. There will also be outdoor dining in a courtyard at the rear of the building.

To realize their vision, they work with the French designer Joseph Dirand with whom they have already collaborated on Girafe et Loulou. Dirand is also in London to work on The Chancery Rosewood which takes over the former site of the American Embassy. If the photo above sounds familiar to you, it’s because the last designer at 16 Charles Street was also behind the gilded-encrusted dining room at the Ritz in London.

We don’t know much more than that – but we’ll update this story when we have more information.

Find out more about 16, rue Charles

Where is it? 16 Charles Street, London W1J 5BH

When? 2022 to be confirmed

West Bank Palace Mosaic, one of the largest in the world, unveiled

0

After several years of renovations, one of the largest floor mosaics in the world, located in the West Bank city of Jericho, is being unveiled.

Located in Hisham Palace, which was built as a winter residence for the caliphs, the tiled floor spans approximately 8,901 square feet.

The room was built during the Umayyad dynasty and the palace dates back to the 8th century.

“The mosaic… consists of 38 carpets with different patterns,” said Iyad Doden, an official at the archaeological site, adding that the patterns included floral and ornamental designs.

“In Palestine we have 28 different types of stones,” he said.

Video poster

The most important feature of the mosaic can be seen in the Caliph’s Court, where a representation of a large tree spans the floor.

“It’s the tree of life,” Doden described, calling attention to the deer photographed under the plant, one of which is eaten by a lion.

“This image represents life at that time,” he said.

The restoration was financed by several contributions, with the help of a Japanese company.

“Japan is one of the sister countries supporting the infrastructure in Palestine and worked on this project, which cost nearly $ 12 million,” Doden said.

Henning Larsen unveils plans for “one of Denmark’s largest contemporary wooden structures”

0

Danish architectural firm Henning Larsen and engineering firm Ramboll designed an eight-story tiered timber building for the Nordhavn waterfront at the eastern end of Copenhagen.

The proposed mixed-use commercial building, called Marmormolen, would measure 28,000 square meters and be constructed entirely from solid timber.

The wooden building will be located in Nordhavn

Marmormolen was designed for the Danish pension fund AP Pension and will be built in the Nordhavn district of Copenhagen. According to Henning Larsen, who designed it with Ramboll, it will be one of the largest contemporary wooden structures in the country.

“The building, which will be one of Denmark’s largest contemporary wooden structures, combines office space, retail and a public program on the popular Nordhavn waterfront,” the studio said.

Marmormolen has a stepped design that tapers towards residential areas
The building will be built entirely in wood

By using wood rather than concrete, the building “incorporates tons of carbon instead of emitting tons,” the studio added.

“Today, it is imperative that architecture challenges our usual notion of structures and materials,” said Søren Øllgaard, partner and design director of Henning Larsen.

“The construction sector is a major emitter of CO2, so we also have great opportunities to improve things. We are excited to be working with AP Pension on a project that puts sustainability and sustainable strategies such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals first. . “

Marmormolen is attached to a public seafront
The wooden building will contain offices, shops and public spaces

Marmormolen will be formed from a collection of rectangular cubes of different heights, rising and falling depending on the site environment.

At its highest point, closest to busy streets and railroad tracks, the building will reach its eight storeys. From there, it will gradually drop to three stories, as it narrows down to a nearby residential area on the other side of the site.

Marmormolen will contain offices, retail spaces and restaurants, and will be surrounded by urban spaces including plazas, gardens and walks on three sides of the building.

The ground floor of the building is planned as an extension of the nearby public waterfront, merging existing public amenities with a landscaped park and a large public market.

A canteen and auditorium also located on the ground floor will serve as both a public restaurant and an event space for markets and theaters.

Multi-level seating will extend from Marmormolen to the waterfront
The ground floor of the building will be an open public space

On the upper floors of the building, the workspaces will offer panoramic views of the Copenhagen skyline and waterfront, while a large common courtyard in the center of the building will provide a green outdoor space inside.

Each of the rectangular cubes will have access to a rooftop terrace and gardens that will house beehives, butterfly hotels and vegetable growing areas for use in canteens.

Interior rendering of a balcony in Marmormolen
The interior will be constructed using wood to echo the structural integrity of the building

“Workplaces used to be very indoor and exclusive, but people today want to feel like they are part of a more diverse community and open up to their surroundings,” said Henning Larsen, deputy director of the design and chief architect Mikkel Eskildsen.

“With Marmormolen, we want to create more than a large office building, we also want it to give something back to the city and bring the building to life, even outside of office hours.”

Interior rendering in Marmormolen with wooden interiors
Greenery and plants will be used throughout the building and inside

Construction of Marmormolen will begin in early 2022 and is expected to open in 2024.

Elsewhere, Henning Larsen is developing Copenhagen’s “first all-wood neighborhood” on the outskirts of the city and a sustainable primary school in Sundby which opened earlier this year.

8 places to escape winter

0

With all due respect for January, February and March, these aren’t exactly the most exciting times of the calendar year. Even if you’re happy with the times you live in, they can seem like dark months and everything in business, a season for making (and sometimes breaking) resolutions, launching work projects, and getting your W-2s together. But this grind is one more reason to get away from it all at this time of year. The only question is: should we embrace the cold or escape it? You can layer up and enjoy a getaway to the mountains or a winter European town, or pull out that swimsuit and park it poolside in a warm spot. Whatever your decision to winter, here are eight destinations to consider.

1

Emeline, Charleston, South Carolina

It may be low season in Charleston, but now is a great time to explore its pastel row houses, cobblestone streets, and iconic palm trees. Emeline, a former Doubletree that has reinvented itself into a sophisticated hotel, is a welcome addition to the Historic District. Her southern manners are in full effect as soon as you step into her retro-inspired, jewel-toned lobby, where you are given an alcoholic punch at check-in.

While a stay here puts you right in the middle of the downtown food scene, you won’t want to miss the hotel’s Italian restaurant, Frannie and the Fox, and its nod to classic underground bars, The Foxhole. Just sit in the decorated hallway and hit the window for on-demand cocktail service.

At Emeline, no detail is left unattended. In each room there is still and sparkling water filtered from the tap, as well as a record player with selected records, among other amenities.

Located in the predominantly pedestrianized district of La Condesa, the boutique hotel is surrounded by numerous cafes, restaurants and bars, as well as several art museums. It belongs to the designer of the fashion brand Octavia, making it a minimalist dream full of neural colors and patios filled with tropical plants. Although there is no restaurant on the property, breakfast is served each morning in the pebble-floored courtyard. At night, natural wine flows freely on the roof.

The NoMad, London, England

If your idea of comfort comes with more culture than powder, there is no place like London in winter. The latest offer from NoMad– and its first outside the United States – is located in a former district court near the Royal Opera House and many independent shops and restaurants. The 91-room boutique hotel spares guests a trip to the 1890s, bringing its rich, saturated sensibilities to its guest-only lobby, rooms, and library bar. True to its 19th-century theme, the Side Hustle Restaurant certainly looks like an old British pub, but you’ll be surprised to learn that it serves Mexican food and cocktails.

Villa Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark

No one winters like the Danes, the inventors of the hyggë, and Copenhagen is one of the most comfortable cities to relax in after a cold day. There is no need to take advantage of the daylight here, as candles and fireplaces light up the streets after sunset in the middle of the afternoon. Villa copenhagen, housed in a neo-baroque building that once served as the headquarters of the Danish Post Office, offers its customers a prime location for shopping, food and culture. Its art-filled lobby includes a lounge and bar that draws locals and travelers alike.

At Villa Copenhagen, sustainability is taken into account at all times. Its main restaurant, Kontrast, is zero waste and carbon-free, the rooftop pool is sustainably heated with the property’s residual energy, and there’s an Earth Suite that’s fitted with 100% recycled decor. And while you might be tempted to sleep after all of these activities, breakfast is just as exciting. The buffet includes pastries from the hotel’s bakery, RUG, which are considered some of the best in town.

Courting in a street lined with living oaks, The Chloe is a reimagined Victorian mansion where rocking chairs dot the wraparound porch and local artwork fill the living room lobby. Renovation of a small kitchen before and after

When we moved into our current home, we sacrificed space to have the option of living by the sea. Having smaller rooms doesn’t matter much when you spend a lot of time at the hotel. outside. It’s a decision we’ve never regretted, with the possible exception of the cramped and poorly organized kitchen.

My wife and I had already built two kitchens, but on those occasions we had more space to work and a blank canvas because we had built the entire structure of these rooms from scratch. This time we had to work within the boundaries of the existing walls, and at first we didn’t even know what the walls were made of.

We wanted to keep the floor tiles, pleasantly neutral, which cross most of the ground floor. Everything else had to go.

The first job was to remove the existing cabinets, which we didn’t see as a problem. The previous owner had used a lot more screws than necessary, which made it a tedious task, but not difficult.

We always planned to upgrade the electricity as there were fewer lights and outlets than we wanted. Revealing the existing wiring made it a necessity. This is not an area where I have any skills, so we brought in a local contractor to secure it. The plumbing pipes were also in poor condition, but I was able to replace them myself.

Bare walls

The existing wall tiles were originally white but had yellowed over time and several were cracked. Normally we would have attacked them with an SDS rotary hammer and a bit. Doing it manually was a safer way to start as we weren’t sure about the underlying structure.

Sure enough, the first layer of tile revealed another layer of tile underneath, probably dating from the 1960s when the house was built. These were attached to the wall with blocks of mortar half an inch thick.

My wife and I did a lot of renovations and we normally installed drywall. However, it would take a lot of work to clean up the existing substrate, so I called a friend of the building contractor. He advised removing the rest of the first coat and then applying a waterproof plaster coating. It would retain strength, be faster and more resistant to any moisture.

Lighter and brighter

My wife is a ceramicist and loves to paint and decorate. She has a much better eye for design and color than I do. She chose light blue cabinets with brushed steel handles that are bright and modern, but have a small molding so that they are not unremarkable. The wall units are taller than the previous ones, which means we have the same storage without anything on the opposite wall. It opened up the room tremendously.

The walls were painted white (more details in a moment), as was the existing interior door which was previously in dull brown varnished pine.

We purchased a low profile range hood to install in the cabinet above the cooktop. It has twin spotlights which provide illumination in this area. We installed LED lighting under the rest of the wall cabinets to illuminate the main food preparation area. Finally, we installed a four-way spotlight track on the ceiling for general lighting.

Space efficient

The kitchen measures only 9 feet by 6 feet, with a small alcove that accommodates a refrigerator. We’ve thought a lot about how to use the area efficiently and how to position the hob, oven, sink, and dishwasher to maximize space.

Moving the microwave from the countertop to the wall has freed up a useful area to the left of the sink. The new sink is 30 percent larger than the old one, which did not have a drainer. However, as the drip tray now reaches the dishwasher, we have also gained space in the center of the countertop.

Base units are now deep drawers rather than cabinets (except the one under the sink). The drawers offer just as much storage, but it’s surprising how much more pleasant they are to use. It is much easier to lift things than to reach the back of low cupboards.

Unique ceramics and art

The finishing touches that elevate it to something particularly special to us is a large mandala wall mural that my wife Xandra painted and her handmade tiles for the backsplash. There are 21 of them, and each has a unique embossed pattern. They add both color and texture, while still being easy to clean.

Final thoughts

The only natural light in the kitchen comes from the glass front door. Changing the cabinets and painting the walls allows this light to reflect into the room. Even in daylight, the difference is quite dramatic. There is an open, uncluttered feel that makes him appear much taller than he actually is. We are delighted with the result.
