Loulou Group from Paris heads to London with gourmet restaurant in Mayfair | Latest news


In Paris and St Tropez, they are responsible for a list of hotter than hot restaurants like Loulou and Girafe – now the Loulou Group is heading to London for its first UK opening.

The team has taken over a Grade II listed building in the heart of Mayfair with plans for a gourmet restaurant. 16 Charles Street has quite a history as a place to party. In the 1920s, it belonged to Dame Margaret Greville who threw a ball at it as part of her role as matchmaker for the Queen Mother and then Prince Albert.

Having seen plans for a casino to take over the Mayfair mansion a few years ago, local residents should be much happier that Parisian restaurateurs are in charge. They plan to “restore 16 Charles Street to its former glory and make it accessible to the public for everyone to enjoy.”

To this end, they will open a restaurant on the ground floor and on the first floor. The second floor will be a “living room and dining room”. The third will include a chef’s table and a private dining area, with more private dining areas on the top floor. There will also be outdoor dining in a courtyard at the rear of the building.

To realize their vision, they work with the French designer Joseph Dirand with whom they have already collaborated on Girafe et Loulou. Dirand is also in London to work on The Chancery Rosewood which takes over the former site of the American Embassy. If the photo above sounds familiar to you, it’s because the last designer at 16 Charles Street was also behind the gilded-encrusted dining room at the Ritz in London.

West Bank Palace Mosaic, one of the largest in the world, unveiled


After several years of renovations, one of the largest floor mosaics in the world, located in the West Bank city of Jericho, is being unveiled.

Located in Hisham Palace, which was built as a winter residence for the caliphs, the tiled floor spans approximately 8,901 square feet.

The room was built during the Umayyad dynasty and the palace dates back to the 8th century.

“The mosaic… consists of 38 carpets with different patterns,” said Iyad Doden, an official at the archaeological site, adding that the patterns included floral and ornamental designs.

“In Palestine we have 28 different types of stones,” he said.

The most important feature of the mosaic can be seen in the Caliph’s Court, where a representation of a large tree spans the floor.

“It’s the tree of life,” Doden described, calling attention to the deer photographed under the plant, one of which is eaten by a lion.

“This image represents life at that time,” he said.

The restoration was financed by several contributions, with the help of a Japanese company.

Henning Larsen unveils plans for “one of Denmark’s largest contemporary wooden structures”


Danish architectural firm Henning Larsen and engineering firm Ramboll designed an eight-story tiered timber building for the Nordhavn waterfront at the eastern end of Copenhagen.

The proposed mixed-use commercial building, called Marmormolen, would measure 28,000 square meters and be constructed entirely from solid timber.

The ground floor of the building is planned as an extension of the nearby public waterfront, merging existing public amenities with a landscaped park and a large public market.

When we moved into our current home, we sacrificed space to have the option of living by the sea. Having smaller rooms doesn’t matter much when you spend a lot of time at the hotel. outside. It’s a decision we’ve never regretted, with the possible exception of the cramped and poorly organized kitchen.

My wife and I had already built two kitchens, but on those occasions we had more space to work and a blank canvas because we had built the entire structure of these rooms from scratch. This time we had to work within the boundaries of the existing walls, and at first we didn’t even know what the walls were made of.

We wanted to keep the floor tiles, pleasantly neutral, which cross most of the ground floor. Everything else had to go.

The first job was to remove the existing cabinets, which we didn’t see as a problem. The previous owner had used a lot more screws than necessary, which made it a tedious task, but not difficult.

We always planned to upgrade the electricity as there were fewer lights and outlets than we wanted. Revealing the existing wiring made it a necessity. This is not an area where I have any skills, so we brought in a local contractor to secure it. The plumbing pipes were also in poor condition, but I was able to replace them myself.

The existing wall tiles were originally white but had yellowed over time and several were cracked. Normally we would have attacked them with an SDS rotary hammer and a bit. Doing it manually was a safer way to start as we weren’t sure about the underlying structure.

Sure enough, the first layer of tile revealed another layer of tile underneath, probably dating from the 1960s when the house was built. These were attached to the wall with blocks of mortar half an inch thick.

My wife and I did a lot of renovations and we normally installed drywall. However, it would take a lot of work to clean up the existing substrate, so I called a friend of the building contractor. He advised removing the rest of the first coat and then applying a waterproof plaster coating. It would retain strength, be faster and more resistant to any moisture.

My wife is a ceramicist and loves to paint and decorate. She has a much better eye for design and color than I do. She chose light blue cabinets with brushed steel handles that are bright and modern, but have a small molding so that they are not unremarkable. The wall units are taller than the previous ones, which means we have the same storage without anything on the opposite wall. It opened up the room tremendously.

The walls were painted white (more details in a moment), as was the existing interior door which was previously in dull brown varnished pine.

We purchased a low profile range hood to install in the cabinet above the cooktop. It has twin spotlights which provide illumination in this area. We installed LED lighting under the rest of the wall cabinets to illuminate the main food preparation area. Finally, we installed a four-way spotlight track on the ceiling for general lighting.

The kitchen measures only 9 feet by 6 feet, with a small alcove that accommodates a refrigerator. We’ve thought a lot about how to use the area efficiently and how to position the hob, oven, sink, and dishwasher to maximize space.

Moving the microwave from the countertop to the wall has freed up a useful area to the left of the sink. The new sink is 30 percent larger than the old one, which did not have a drainer. However, as the drip tray now reaches the dishwasher, we have also gained space in the center of the countertop.

Base units are now deep drawers rather than cabinets (except the one under the sink). The drawers offer just as much storage, but it’s surprising how much more pleasant they are to use. It is much easier to lift things than to reach the back of low cupboards.

The finishing touches that elevate it to something particularly special to us is a large mandala wall mural that my wife Xandra painted and her handmade tiles for the backsplash. There are 21 of them, and each has a unique embossed pattern. They add both color and texture, while still being easy to clean.

The only natural light in the kitchen comes from the glass front door. Changing the cabinets and painting the walls allows this light to reflect into the room. Even in daylight, the difference is quite dramatic. There is an open, uncluttered feel that makes him appear much taller than he actually is. We are delighted with the result.
